The Leather
My products are made from responsibly sourced Italian leather.
This leather is vegetable tanned, which means the process to tan the hide uses tree bark and vegetables, instead of chemicals. This process is kinder on our environment, and allows for a beautiful natural patina over time. This veg tan leather is their top grade, it is full grain and is soft to the touch with a small amount of firmness. It has a unique rustic look that adds beautiful depth to the leather. You may notice some character markings on your piece - the hides come to me showing most beauty marks, wrinkles, scars etc in them. I do not cut around these kinds of marks in an effort to reduce waist, and because I believe these kinds of markings tell a story and only make the piece more beautiful.
Leather is sourced from The Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium. Members of the Consortium agree to use only traditional natural ingredients that are safe to be recycled back into the environment and ensure that no animal is killed for its skin (ie. they only use byproducts of the meat industry).
Leather Care
I completely understand that you want to take care of your piece so it lasts forever. The truth is, wanting vegetable tanned leather to stay perfect forever defeats it's whole purpose. It is meant to absorb the traces of your life to create its unique patina. You do need to moisturize/condition your leather to ensure it lives to it's maximum potential. You can use any leather conditioner/moisturizer that is not colored (different from soap or cleaner) about twice a year. Start small, a little goes a long way! Conditioning will darken your piece a bit so don't be alarmed, it will lighten up again with use. I recommend Smith's Leather Balm
As far as weather proofing goes, you are welcome to if you want, however I don't do that on any of my products and I recommend just doing your best to keep it from getting wet (soaked mainly - small drops won't typically do anything) and if it does get wet then embrace that part of it's story ❤️
